MONTESSORI PHILOSOPHY

DESCRIPTION

This module assists practitioners to understand Dr. Montessori’s practical research on the education of young children. Some of these are the Absorbent Mind, the Prepared Environment, Normalisation, the Sensitivity Period and the Stages of Development. An appreciation of Montessori Education is included

OBJECTIVES

  • To develop an understanding of Maria Montessori’s life and work
  • To discuss the principles of the Montessori method
  • To discuss the organisation of the environment and management of children’s behaviour in the Montessori environment
  • To discuss the role of teacher in Maria Montessoria’s approach

CLASSROOM APPLICATION

DESCRIPTION

This module intends to help learners understand the many aspects of curriculum development and how current emerging theories and approaches relate to our understanding of curriculum development. Also, the module provides useful approaches to classroom management and develops awareness and knowledge of special education.

OBJECTIVES

  • To understand the fundamentals that contribute to developing the curriculum
  • To have an overview of some current methods and approaches that can be implemented in a Montessori classroom.
  • To discuss some appropriate approaches to classroom management
  • To understand basic knowledge of special education to apply in a classroom setting

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

DESCRIPTION

This module assists practitioners in understanding the process of child development in the children age of one month to six years. Some of the areas addressed are a child’s physical development, cognitive development, language development and social development. A discussion of modern theories of child development is included.

OBJECTIVES

  • To discuss different theories of child development
  • To understand how a child develops physically , cognitively, socially and in terms of language
  • To understand how a child’s development in one area affects his/her development in the others.

PRACTICAL LIFE EXERCISES

DESCRIPTION

This module assists practitioners to teach the child to function in his own environment by teaching him how to cope with things around him. The daily function of our home are routine and simple to us, but they are new and exciting to a child. The course will highlight the importance of practical life exercises and students will be expected to observe the presentation of the main groups of practical life exercises

OBJECTIVES

  • To discuss the importance of practical life exercises and how they influence children
  • To discuss with students the organisation of practical life exercises and the Montessori environment for such exercises
  • Learners will have the opportunity to review the presentation of the practical life exercises
  • To analyse the direct and indirect aims of each practical life exercise

SENSORIAL EDUCATION

DESCRIPTION

Sensorial exercises are concerned with the development and refinement of the five senses, thereby sharpening the child’s intellect control and preparing him for more advanced exercises. The sensorial materials lay a solid foundation for Mathematics, Geometry, Geography, Botany, Art and Music.

OBJECTIVES

  • To discuss the importance of sensorial exercises and how they influence children.
  • To discuss the organisation of sensorial exercises and the Montessori environment for such exercises.
  • Learners will have the opportunity to review the presentation of the sensorial exercises.
  • To analyse the direct and indirect aims for each exercise.

LANGUAGE

DESCRIPTION

A multi-sensory approach that combines phonics, stories and language experiences to bring meaning to the learning of reading and writing. Discovering language becomes interesting, fun and creative through activities in the Pink, Blue and Green Montessori language series. This course assists practitioners to employ a multi-sensory aproach to teaching reading and writing.

OBJECTIVES

  • To understand language development.
  • To discuss with students the organisation of language exercises and the Montessori environment for such exercises.
  • To introduce classroom techniques and methodology suitable for language teaching of young children.
  • To introduce Montessori apparatus suitable for language teaching.

MATHEMATICS

DESCRIPTION

Mathematics is concerned with making generalisations and theoretical models of the real world. The young child needs to be given a variety of skills and basic understanding of concepts.

OBJECTIVES

  • To discuss the importance of Mathematics and how it influences children.
  • To discuss the organisation of Mathematics and the Montessori environment for such exercises.
  • Learners will have the opportunity to review the presentation of Mathematics.
  • To analyse the direct and indirect aims for each exercise.
  • To involve learners in the presentation of Mathematics.

CULTURAL SUBJECTS

DESCRIPTION

The Montessori cultural subjects include:

  • Nature study
  • Botany and Zoology
  • Geography
  • History

Through various materials and creative activities, children have the opportunity to explore and understand their environment, refine their perception and create foundation for scientific knowledge to be acquired in the years to come.

OBJECTIVES

  • To introduce students to the Montessori Principles for teaching the cultural area of the curriculum.
  • To show how to prepare and present Geography, Botany, Zoology and History materials.
  • To discuss ideas for environmental projects that integrate the Montessori curriculum.
